Public Speaking Will Make You a Better Leader

Being proficient at public speaking and presenting can open so many doors for you in your career and in life. If you are in a position of leadership, a great personal goal to have is to always try to be the very best leader you can be. Being an effective speaker and communicator will help you make enormous strides towards achieving this.

Having Something to Say

Don’t Google great speakers and watch them on YouTube and then get imposter syndrome when you have to deliver a speech. Just observe, learn and be inspired by them and perhaps adapt any techniques they use that you think may also work for you.

To be a public speaker who people want to listen to, you don’t have to have done something phenomenal in life like climb a mountain, win an Olympic Gold medal, be a television personality or be a famous CEO. You just have to have something to say that people want or need to listen to, and you need to be able to deliver your message as confidently, effectively and memorably as you can.

C’est tout – we can all do it!!

The Importance of Preparation

Preparation is one of the nearest things to a public speaking magic bullet.

A speech or presentation is like an iceberg. What you deliver is just the 10% that is above the water. The other 90% under the water is all the work and preparation you have put in beforehand on your content and delivery style. (If you don’t prepare – remember what happened to the Titanic!).

Take Every Speaking Opportunity You Can

Learning public speaking is not like trying to transcribe and understand The Scroll of Thoth, but it is something that many people do not enjoy doing. Now, while there is a lot of highbrow technical stuff that has been written about the art of public speaking, don’t let that bamboozle you or make you think this is some dark art only understood by a few – it isn’t.

Sure, unlike those natural geniuses who can turn their hand in an instant to anything, most of us have to train and work at our public speaking and then keep learning and working at it. But the best way of learning is to keep doing and take every speaking opportunity you can.

C’est tout – we can all do it!!
